17-Year-Old killed in Police Shooting in Yaalppanam
A 17-year-old boy was killed in a police shooting early this morning (10.02.2026) in the Kayts police division of Yaalppanam. According to available information, a van passing through a police checkpoint did not stop when instructed by the police. In response, police opened fire on the vehicle. The young driver was critically injured and rushed to hospital, but despite efforts to save him, he later died from his injuries. Two other persons who were travelling in the van were arrested by the police.

The Regional Coordinator of the Human Rights Commission of Sri Lanka (HRCSL), T. Kanagaraj, along with other officials, visited the site and conducted an investigation into the fatal shooting incident.

Two bullet marks were found on the rear of the vehicle. The other damages observed on the vehicle appear to be marks caused when the police struck the vehicle as it drove past, disregarding police orders.
